But not every European country is equal for families. Here are the safest in 2026, ranked by advisory level + family infrastructure signals.

How we ranked these

We used four inputs:

1. US State Department advisory level (Level 1 preferred)
2. Healthcare access for children — pediatric ERs, English-speaking staff, short wait times
3. Family infrastructure — kid-friendly transit, stroller-accessible streets, family hotel availability
4. Crime and street safety — low violent crime, low petty crime in tourist zones

The 2026 rankings

1. Iceland 🇮🇸

• Advisory: Level 1
• Why for families: Tiny population, near-zero violent crime, English widely spoken, hospitals staffed with English-speaking pediatricians. Reykjavík is a 30-minute walk end-to-end with stroller-friendly sidewalks. The Blue Lagoon and Golden Circle tours all accept infants and toddlers.

2. Switzerland 🇨🇭

• Why for families: Trains accept strollers without folding, every train station has elevators, restaurants are universally welcoming of children. Pediatric ERs in every major city. Lucerne, Interlaken, and Zermatt are purpose-built for family travel.
